Puigdemont has political immunity withdrawn
The General Court of the European Union has withdrawn the political immunity of former Catalan regional president Carles Puigdemont, paving the way for a possible extradition.
Judges threw out an appeal lodged by Mr. Puigdemont – along with Toni Comín and Clara Ponsatí – following a decision made by the European Parliament to waiver their right to not facing prosecution for their involvement in the contested 2017 Catalan independence referendum and declaration of independence.
Legal immunity was restored in May last year following a hearing at the Court of Justice of the European Union, however the measure was only in place whilst this appeal was ongoing.
The three – who have been in self-imposed exile since shortly after the referendum – have said they intend to appeal the decision.
