A man who caused a wild fire which damaged a number of homes and destroyed multiple vehicles in Dénia has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison.

A yellow weather warning has been issued for the Costa Blanca, as high temperatures have been forecast for today.
Meteorological agency Aemet has warned that temperatures could get in excess of 36 ºC this afternoon.
People are being advised to remain out of the sun at peak times, and to ensure they remain hydrated during the hot weather.

Two men, who were wanted on European Arrest Warrants have been detained by police in Benidorm and Dénia.
The fugitives, one German and one Romanian, were detained by officers over the weekend.
One person was wanted on fraud charges, whilst the other was on the run after being sentenced to a year in prison for driving without a licence.
Extradition proceedings have now got underway for the pair.

The Generalitat has announced a €11.2 million investment in the refurbishment of stations on the regional tram lines in Alicante and Benidorm.
Works will soon begin on stations on Line 9 between Benidorm and Dénia and part of Line 1 between Luceros and Benidorm.
Improved access at 13 stations for those with reduced mobility is one of the key aspects of the works, ahead of new trams coming into service in the coming months.

A man has died after striking the rocks whilst diving into the sea at Playa La Cala de Dénia.
Emergency services were alerted to the scene shortly before 3pm yesterday afternoon, after the man – understood to be aged between 20 to 25 years of age – was found injured in the sea with serious head injuries.
Despite the actions of emergency services, he was declared dead on arrival at the Marina Alta hospital in Dénia.

Phase 1 of de-escalation measures roll out across much of Spain
Large parts of the country move into phase 1 of the de-escalation plan today after 57 days of lockdown, as part of the return to a new normality.
The Canary Islands and parts of the Costa Blanca join 12 other regions moving to the first phase of the easing of restrictions.
Whilst the region of Alicante remains at phase 0, Alcoy, Dénia, La Marina Baixa, Elda, Orihuela and Torrevieja have moved into phase 1.
Madrid, Catalonia, Valencia, Andalucía and Castilla-La Mancha are amongst those who remain either fully or partially in phase 0.
Phase 1 allows for some retail establishments to open, hotels will be able to partially open their doors and some bar terraces may reopen whilst adhering to strict social distancing rules.
However people are being advised to maintain social distancing at all times, and not to make unnecessary journeys.

A memorial to seven RAF airmen who died when their Wellington Bomber crashed in the mountains near to Denia nearly 70-years-ago has been unveiled.
Relatives and airmen from the RAF gathered to watch a plinth be installed on the location of the accident, which happened on the 5 December 1950.
Flt Sgt Ernest Hansom, Flt Lt Leonard West and aircraftmen Roy Ousley and Neville Jones all lost their lives in the accident.

A Baleària high speed ferry that ran aground last month at the port of Dénia is to be broken up on site, after authorities ruled out refloating the stricken vessel.
Work has been ongoing since the Pinar del Río struck the breakwater on the 16th August to determine if the catamaran could be refloated.
However the location of the ship, and damage sustained since the accident meant it was too difficult to refloat her.
A crane was spotted lifting equipment from the ship in the last few days, and she will be broken up in situ in the coming months.

Divers have attempted to refloat a fast ferry which ran aground at the port of Denia, causing nearly 400 passengers to be evacuated.
The Balearia Fast ferry Pinar del Río, which was carrying 393 passengers and 70 vehicles, struck the harbour wall on Friday night.
No one was injured in the incident, and the ship remained water tight.
Authorities are trying to determine the cause of the incident.

An invstigation has been launched after the The Bank of Spain’s website was hit by a cyber attack at the weekend.
The Denial-of-Service attack temporarily disrupted access to the site, a spokesman for the central bank said on Monday. However the attack has no effect on personal data or the functioning of the bank.
Now an investigation has been launched to determine who launched the attack, and how to prevent it from occurring in the future.

Spain retains top position for Blue Flag beaches worldwide
Beaches across the county have been awarded more blue flags this year, after the latest round of flags were awarded.
In the Canaries, over 40 beaches on all the islands major tourist destinations achieved the award for cleanliness.
Tenerife was awarded 13 flags, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura 12.
Meanwhile in the Costa Blanca have been awarded more blue flags this year, after the latest round of flags were awarded. Over 80 beaches on all the regions major tourist destinations achieved the award for cleanliness.
10 beaches in Alicante gained the prestigious award, with flags also going to Santa Pola, Torrevieja, Benidorm, Xábia, Dénia and Calpe
Beaches across Barcelona have been awarded more blue flags this year, after the latest round of flags were awarded. Over 40 beaches nearby achieved the award for cleanliness.
Sant Sebastià i San Miguel, Barceloneta, Nova Icaria, Bogatell, Mar Bella, Nova Mar Bella and Badalona beaches all made the cut.
Nationwide, Spain will have a total of 696 blue flag beaches this year, an increase of 12 on last year. That number of beaches makes it ranked number 1 worldwide.
The European Federation of Environmental Education released the details of beaches, marinas and tourist operations worldwide yesterday. 590 beaches (11 more than last year), 101 marinas (1 more than in 2017) and 5 sustainable tourist boats (three from Mallorca and two from Malaga) all made the grade.
