Spain retains top position for Blue Flag beaches worldwide

Beaches across the county have been awarded more blue flags this year, after the latest round of flags were awarded.

In the Canaries, over 40 beaches on all the islands major tourist destinations achieved the award for cleanliness.

Tenerife was awarded 13 flags, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura 12.

Meanwhile in the Costa Blanca have been awarded more blue flags this year, after the latest round of flags were awarded. Over 80 beaches on all the regions major tourist destinations achieved the award for cleanliness.

10 beaches in Alicante gained the prestigious award, with flags also going to Santa Pola, Torrevieja, Benidorm, Xábia, Dénia and Calpe

Beaches across Barcelona have been awarded more blue flags this year, after the latest round of flags were awarded. Over 40 beaches nearby achieved the award for cleanliness.

Sant Sebastià i San Miguel, Barceloneta, Nova Icaria, Bogatell, Mar Bella, Nova Mar Bella and Badalona beaches all made the cut.

Nationwide, Spain will have a total of 696 blue flag beaches this year, an increase of 12 on last year. That number of beaches makes it ranked number 1 worldwide.

The European Federation of Environmental Education released the details of beaches, marinas and tourist operations worldwide yesterday. 590 beaches (11 more than last year), 101 marinas (1 more than in 2017) and 5 sustainable tourist boats (three from Mallorca and two from Malaga) all made the grade.
