A 70-year-old woman has died after drowning whilst bathing on the El Arenal beach in Xàbia.
Emergency services were called at around 5pm yesterday afternoon after the woman – who has yet to be identified – was pulled unconscious from the water.
Despite the actions of emergency services, the woman was declared dead at the scene. A post mortem investigation is to be carried out to determine the cause of death.

The Ayuntament de Xàbia has announced a new tax management system that is expected to improve management and collection of taxes, whilst making it easier for residents to file tax returns.
In a meeting of the council this week, they approved a tender worth nearly €200,000 for the project to modernise the city’s tax system, moving the current system to the cloud and allowing for improved tax reporting via the internet.
Alongside improvements for the public, the system will also be able to identify tax fraud quicker. It is expected to be introduced in the coming months.

Historical levels of snowfall have been reported, in what is being called one of the worst winter storms in years.

An earth tremor was reported on Wednesday night at 10pm (local time) across the Costa Blanca.
The 2.9 magnitude quake’s epicentre was located just south of Javea at a depth of 4km.
The quake, which lasted just under two seconds resulted in buildings being shaken along with a loud bang heard across a large area of the region.

I leave my almost six years as HMA to Spain with a wealth of wonderful memories of this fantastic country. I understand why so many UK Nationals choose to live and visit here.
One of the tremendous privileges of this job has been to meet many of you, the British Nationals involved in your communities in so many different ways. Those of you volunteering with organisations like Cruz Roja, Age Concern and so many more; helping fight forest fires in Javea or looking after British cemeteries; those raising funds to help those in need; young people volunteering with organisations like Street Angels in Mallorca, helping to look after British visitors to the island or British councillors serving their local communities.
The footprint of British education relies on UK Nationals living and working here, as teachers and assistants in the many British schools and language academies. UK Nationals are also working in businesses across Spain – from bars and restaurants on the costas to the Big Five accountancy firms.
It has been an honour to represent Queen and country and to serve you, the UK nationals living here. If I have one final message as we leave the EU, it is to make sure you, your friends and family are properly registered as residents. And check on your neighbours – make sure they are registered too.
I wish you all continued health and happiness in your lives here in Spain.

As the hot weather comes to an end, nearly a hundred people have been evacuated after heavy rains caused landslides in Ibiza, and a number of beaches across the Spanish coast have been damaged by localised flooding.
According to official figures released, in some places over 100 litres per square meter of rain fell during the worst of the weather.
Some popular tourist beaches have seen significant damage. In the Valencian region, La Granadella beach in Xàbia (javea) has been split in two due to flash flooding. Numerous beaches across the east coast have reported damage due to the rains.

Guardia Civil have launched an investigation to search for the arsonists believed to have caused the fires that have destroyed more than 812 hectares of land in the Costa Blanca.
1400 people were evacuated from their homes, and millions of euros of damage was caused by the fires, which still are burning in some places. 16 residential estates in Benitatxell and Jávea were at risk of destruction in the fire, however all home owners who were evacuated have now been allowed home.
Valencian regional premier Ximo Puig has said that the fires were an “act of environmental terrorism” in a press conference.
Guardia Civil’s environmental crimes department is questioning witnesses and asking for the public’s cooperation.

The new town council building in Javea has failed a number of tests on its external structure, after a number of tiles had to be removed from it’s facade.
40 tiles have been removed from the building, which only opened last March at a cost of €6.6m.
Repairs, as well as works for improving access for disabled visitors will start soon.

Jávea’s Yacht Club were busy at the weekend, as they carried out a clean up of the harbour in the city.
Along with the local scuba diving club, the club removed rubbish from the sea floor of the harbour, as well as checking for sources
of pollution.
The day, held as part of the Salà La Mar festival, and an ongoing campaign to maintain a blue flag in the region, wrapped up with a
barbecue.

Authorities in Jávea have banned the use of speed and motor boats from all its caves found along its cliff faces.
The new law has been introduced in an effort to keep snorkelers, divers and swimmers safe, as well as to protect the environment.
Now only paddle boats, canoes or those operated by hand will be able to access the caves, which are popular with divers and swimmers.
