Policia Nacional in Elche have arrested 11 people in connection with a botched kidnapping between two drugs gangs .
Officers were alerted to the situation of a woman being held hostage in a property.
However upon securing the release of the woman, it was discovered that the victim had been held hostage following a bungled robbery attempt between two rival gangs in the city.
Police proceeded to arrest both groups of people, as well as confiscating over 1.5kg of marijuana during the police operation. Those detained are aged between 29 and 39 years of age and of Spanish, Romanian, German and Irish nationalities.

An 18-year-old boy from Elche who was one of those who attended an end-of-year trip to Mallorca has been admitted to intensive care suffering from the coronavirus.
He is understood to be the only covid patient in the two hospitals in the city, and is understood to be under observation by medical practitioners.
The number of cases related to a concert on the island of Mallorca has now passed 1,300 cases, with a positivity rate of 25.7% in young people.
Across the Valencian region a further 618 new cases of the virus were detected in the last day, with a further 2 covid related deaths.

The department of health in the Valencian region has confirmed the first case of the Indian or Delta variant of the coronavirus after being treated in Elche.
It’s understood the person – who is under medical observation at the General University Hospital of Elche – travelled to the area from Madrid, where it is believed they contracted the virus.
Medical professionals have confirmed that the patient is in isolation, and is responding well to treatment.

The Ayuntamiento de Elche has announced that all of the city’s beaches are to become smoke free.
In a press releases issued by the city council yesterday, Councillor for the Environment, Esther Díez said the measure would improve the city’s beaches not only for visitors to them, but would also improve the areas cleanliness.
Head of of Tourism, Carles Molina, went on to confirm that information on smoke free beaches will be provided, along with the benefits of giving up cigarette use.
22.5% of the Valencian community are smokers, which results in nearly 6000 deaths a year.

Policia Local in Elche have arrested two men in connection with vandalism of railway engines and carriages in the town.
The two were discovered after being spotted by a passer by who was walking past a former freight terminal on the outskirts of the town.
Two carriages were covered in graffiti, with damage covering an area of 30 metres across the train.
The pair are now under investigation for more possible cases in the region, and could face up to three years in prison.

Ryanair has announced a new route from Alicante Elche airport.
The Irish budget airline will soon offer connections between Alicante and the German city of Bremen from the start of May.
In total two flights will operate between the cities each week, with the operator offering significant discounts in an effort to entice passengers back onto the airline following on from the coronavirus pandemic.
The routes were announced along with a number of new operations for the carrier across Spain.

Policia Local in Elche have detained four people in connection with graffiti that appeared in Elche-Parque station.
The suspects were identified after being investigated in a co-operation between the Policia Local in Elche and also Policia Nacional.
The men are due to appear in court in the coming days. If convicted, they face a fine of up to €2500 and nine years in prison.

Amber and yellow weather warnings issued for Valencian region
Amber and yellow weather warnings have been issued for the region for thunder and heavy rain in places.
Up to 40mm of rain an hour is forecast to fall this afternoon, with an amber weather warning in place for the northern Costa Blanca until 9pm tonight.
As well as thunder and rain, there is also a risk of hail in places, as well as localised flooding.

In a pioneering study, waste water will be tested for traces of the coronavirus as it arrives at sewage treatment plants.
