Tributes have been paid to a 47-year-old Policia Local officer from Calpe, who has died after trying to rescue a person trapped in a vehicle which was stranded in flood waters.

The city council in Calpe have opened a consultation over light pollution and measures that the local authority could take to lessen the amount of light in the night sky.
Citizens will have until the end of next month to provide their feedback on the proposals, which will focus on reducing light pollution, as well as enforcing restrictions on the hours where non-essential lighting – such as on adverts and for decorative purposes on landmarks – can be used.
Advocates for the plans say the changes will help ensure people sleep better, as well as providing benefits to the local ecology.

Guardia Civil in Calpe have arrested 58 people after an investigation was launched on suspicion of falsifying documents regarding oranges.
Over 500 tonnes of the fruit with unknown origins were found to have been placed into the market. Officers launched an investigation last June.
51 men and 7 women – aged between 19 to 62 years of age – were detained by Guardia Civil in connection with the case.

Spain retains top position for Blue Flag beaches worldwide
Beaches across the county have been awarded more blue flags this year, after the latest round of flags were awarded.
In the Canaries, over 40 beaches on all the islands major tourist destinations achieved the award for cleanliness.
Tenerife was awarded 13 flags, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura 12.
Meanwhile in the Costa Blanca have been awarded more blue flags this year, after the latest round of flags were awarded. Over 80 beaches on all the regions major tourist destinations achieved the award for cleanliness.
10 beaches in Alicante gained the prestigious award, with flags also going to Santa Pola, Torrevieja, Benidorm, Xábia, Dénia and Calpe
Beaches across Barcelona have been awarded more blue flags this year, after the latest round of flags were awarded. Over 40 beaches nearby achieved the award for cleanliness.
Sant Sebastià i San Miguel, Barceloneta, Nova Icaria, Bogatell, Mar Bella, Nova Mar Bella and Badalona beaches all made the cut.
Nationwide, Spain will have a total of 696 blue flag beaches this year, an increase of 12 on last year. That number of beaches makes it ranked number 1 worldwide.
The European Federation of Environmental Education released the details of beaches, marinas and tourist operations worldwide yesterday. 590 beaches (11 more than last year), 101 marinas (1 more than in 2017) and 5 sustainable tourist boats (three from Mallorca and two from Malaga) all made the grade.

The number of people using the local tram between Denia and Benidorm fell by 3% in July.
The figures however come as no surprise to operator FGV, as part of the network was closed for works and modernisation.
However the operator is facing criticism, after it emerged that the bus takes less time to run its route between Calpe and Denia than the train. However the operator says that local geography makes the route of the line longer, and the curves on the track mean trains have to run slower.

Concern is growing for a missing 80-year-old British woman who went missing last week.
Judicial Police in Calpe have increased their calls for help in searching for Esma Jean Digby. She was wearing long white trousers and a brown top and red shoes. She was possibly carrying a blue handbag and may be wearing glasses. Hopes were dashed when a possible sighting on the road to Orba failed to find the missing woman.
A Facebook page, called “Esma Jean Digby Missing in Spain” has also been set up.
Esma suffers from Dementia and is Asthmatic.
People are being asked to call emergency services if they spot her.

The upgraded Altea to Calpe tram line was officially opened yesterday by Valencia regional president Ximo Puig.
The line has seen a €9m investment, to upgrade the tracks, as well as improve the routes infrastructure.
New plans are in place to upgrade the line to electric supply instead of Diesel, and also to upgrade the line from Bendidorm to Denia.

Calpe will be overrun by Zombies this month, as the town hosts its first Zombie thriller night.
Last Day Zombie, which will see over 500 people take part in the event, will see people dressed as Zombies roam the streets in a game of cat and mouse. With survivors being chased by zombies whilst trying to gain access to areas in the town.

The tram line between Altea and Calpe will reopen at the end of the month after nearly 8 months of works were carried out on the line.
Security systems have been improved on the busy route, and now drivers are to undergo training on the new configuration of the line before it reopens at the end of May.

Dogs may soon be welcomed onto beaches in Calpe and Denia, after 2 new initiatives were proposed by the Citizen’s Participation Department in Calpe and also the local government in Denia.
Dog owners in Calpe last night had the chance to voice their thoughts on the scheme to allow dogs onto part of the beach, and in Denia, authorities have said that they will soon be allowed onto certain areas of beaches during low season.
The beaches would be separated from the main sands, and would face strong regulation.

Works to fix a notorious black spot will soon begin, after Calpe Town Hall were given the go-ahead to purchase land.
Works on the new roundabouts for the N-332 in Calpe will begin in the near future, to bring the road up to standards necessary to manage the current flow of traffic.
Over €400,000 will be spent on the works, with the new road sections opening in the summer of next year.

Professional endurance runner Juan Pedro Garcia, from Calpe, has taken second place in the recent Sahara Marathon.
The runner completed the grueling race in 3 hours, 13 minutes and 2 seconds.
Over 500 international athletes took place in the race, with money raised in the race going to local charities in the Sarharian region.
