321 Spanish athletes will take part in today’s opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympic Games, as the XXXII Olympiad officially begins in Japan.
Delayed by a year due to the coronavirus pandemic, athletes from across the country are now finally able to aim for their chance to win an Olympic medal.
184 men and 137 women will take place in 29 sports with hopes that the country will surpass it’s current record haul of 22 which was gained at the Barcelona games.
The Opening ceremony takes place today from 1pm Spanish Time / Noon Canarian time.

Spain’s Euro 2020 preparations have been thrown into disarray after a second player tested positive for Covid-19.
The Spanish Football Association announced that centre back Diego Llorente tested positive for the virus and is currently in isolation.
This announcement came two days after captain Sergio Busquets left the camp when he tested positive for the coronavirus. No other team member has tested positive, but all squad training has been suspended.
Players who test positive must stay in isolation for at least 10 days, meaning both Busquets and Llorente will miss the Euro 2020’s opener against Sweden.

The Spanish men’s handball team has won bronze in the World Cup being held in Egypt.
The team beat France 35-29 in the runners up final, after topping their group in the knock out stages.
It was the first time the world cup has been held behind closed doors, with the final between Denmark and host country Egypt being held in Cairo.

Tributes have been paid from across the Spanish sporting world to former Barcelona FC football player Diego Maradona, who died of a heart attack yesterday.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of all time before drug and alcohol addiction marred his career, Maradona died at his home in Argentina after suffering a heart attack, his lawyer said.
Maradona netted an incredible 38 goals in 58 appearances for Barcelona, whom he joined in 1982, before moving to Napoli in 1984.
He also had a one-season stint at Sevilla after leaving Napoli.
A minute’s silence will be observed ahead of todays Europa League matches as a tribute to the sportsman.

The game was a nil-nil draw until the 76th minute, when Viktor Tsygankov scored from outside the area.
21,000 fans at Kyiv’s Olympic Stadium celebrated the goal and subsequent win, in a reversal of fortunes. The last time the two teams met, Spain won 4-0.

Spain and Portugal’s football federations are to launch a joint bid for the countries to host the 2030 World Cup.
There has also been interest from Morocco in hosting the tournament, and talk of a joint bid by Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Chile.
A statement from the Royal Spanish Football Federation said it had signed an agreement with the Portuguese Football Federation to launch a bid for the sporting event.
The agreement was signed at the Jose Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon on Wednesday.

Football has returned to Spain, with a second half of a second-division match that was halted last year after fans called a player a Nazi.
Rayo Vallecano defeated Albacete 1-0 in the first match to be played in the country since mid-March. Last year’s match was scoreless at halftime when it was halted after Rayo fans used abusive language against Albacete’s Ukrainian forward Roman Zozulia.

People missing their fix of international football will be able to soon watch Spain take on Finland in an official FIFA event.
The virtual matches will see four games played between top players such as Zinedine Zidan and Adrián play top Finish players in the ‘FIFA eNations StayAndPlay Friendlies'[icon name=”external-link” class=”” unprefixed_class=””].
Matches between Poland and Germany have already been played.
In April tennis fans were able to enjoy an electronic version of the Madrid Open.

Spanish football fans have been given good news, as La Liga and Segunda División have been given the go-ahead to restart from 8 June.
The Spanish top and second divisions were suspended on 12 March due to the pandemic.
With 11 rounds of fixtures still to play, La Liga stepped up its preparations for a resumption this week as group training of up to 10 players was allowed.
La Liga has said it will confirm a date for the start of games in the coming days.
