The new Orihuela-Montepinar bike path is due to open to cyclists in the next few weeks, almost a month ahead of schedule.
Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, visited the site of the new route yesterday to observe the works being carried out along the route.
The 2KM route will be fully paved, with clear separation between road and cycle traffic, as well as enhanced drainage along the route.
It is expected that the new path will be opened on Sunday 15th August.

Exhibitions featuring prominent members of the community, as well as podcasts and social events were held across the city yesterday, with the exhibition celebrating diversity and mutual respect open until September.
Alongside that, the formal unveiling of an umbrella monument in the colours of the LGBTI flag was held on Calle López Pozas.

Orihuela City Council have launched a new street cleaning and plastic recycling initiative, which is hoped will result in cleaner streets and less plastics being sent to landfill.
Councillor Dámaso Aparicio launched the campaign yesterday, calling on all people in the area to contribute to efforts to reduce the volumes of waste sent to dumps across the area or ending up in rivers and the sea.
He highlighted the improvements made over recent years, with the volumes of plastic recycled increasing by over 500% since 2009.

Over a thousand school children in Orihuela have taken part in the latest round of road safety awareness classes for pupils across the region.
1400 kids from seven schools learnt about how to cross the road safely, as well as how to keep safe whilst near traffic in the course provided by Policia Local.
They finally spent time putting their training to use in the playground, where a children’s road network had been built, whilst also getting a look around one of the forces police cars.

A 69-year-old woman has drowned after being discovered in a swimming pool late on Sunday night.
Emergency services were called to a residential complex in Orihuela C0sta at around 9.30 on Sunday night to reports of a woman being pulled unresponsive from the swimming pool.
Despite the actions of neighbours and emergency services, the woman was declared dead at the scene.
An investigation into the cause of her death has been launched.

Orihuela’s Department of Commerce has announced a new E-Commerce platform that will be available to all businesses in the city.
The platform will allow businesses to offer an online retail facility, especially those establishments that have yet to set up their online sales presence.
As well as detailing products, the new platform will also offer secure payment handling, as well as logistics management.
In total the project will cost €72,600, with half of the funding coming from a grant provided by the Spanish Chamber of Commerce.
