Thousands protest against amnesty law in Madrid
In the largest protest yet, approximately one hundred and seventy thousand people took to the streets of Madrid to oppose an amnesty law agreed by Spain’s Socialists over Catalonia’s two thousand and seventeen separatist bid.
The amnesty will cover approximately four hundred people involved in the independence bid, including separatists and police.
This will be the largest amnesty in Spain since the nineteen seventy-seven Franco dictatorship. It is also the first amnesty approved within the European Union since nineteen ninety-one.
Protesters, including neo-Nazi groups, have held consecutive peaceful demonstrations outside the Socialist headquarters in Madrid for fifteen nights.
Around seventy percent of respondents in a mid-September survey were against the idea of an amnesty.
