Sanchez to visit Ukraine as Spain begins EU Council Presidency
Saturday will see Spain gain presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will assume the role as the fifth Spanish President since the formation of the Council, the first one being in 1989.
His first act as president will be to visit Kyiv, where he will hold meetings with Ukrainian President Volodímir Zelenski, in a show of solidarity for the war-torn country.
The four priorities for the presidency include the reindustrialisation of the EU, advancing the green transition, promoting greater social and economic justice and strengthening European unity.
To mark the occaision, a special two euro coin is to be minted, which will be distributed across Spain. 1.5 million coins are expected to be minted during the presidency period.
350 events will take part across Spain during the 184 day presidency of the Council.
