Power Outage: Investigation begins to determine cause of nationwide power outage

Spain experienced its’s worst power outage in history yesterday, causing widespread disruption across the country. Major cities, including Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville, lost electricity shortly after 12:30 in the afternoon. Public transport systems were heavily affected, with metro services suspended and traffic lights failing in several areas. Businesses, hospitals, and even airports reported temporary outages.

Neighbouring Portugal and parts of southern France also experienced brief disruptions. Red Eléctrica, Spain’s national grid operator, confirmed the cause was a major fault on the high-voltage transmission network, likely linked to a technical failure in a cross-border connection. Engineers worked throughout the afternoon to restore power, with most urban areas reconnected by early evening. However, some rural communities faced longer delays.

An investigation is now underway to determine the exact cause of the failure and to strengthen Spain’s energy infrastructure against future risks.
