Spain’s clergy abused over 200,000 minors, probe estimates

An independent commission investigating the abuse of minors by the Catholic church in Spain estimates that over two hundred thousand children had been sexually abused by members of the clergy since 1940, with the number rising when including abuse by lay members.

The Catholic Church’s response to cases of child abuse involving the clergy is deemed insufficient, leading to recommendations for a state fund to pay reparations to victims.

The report acknowledged that the church had taken steps to address both abuse by priests and efforts to cover up the scandal, but said they were not enough.
