Pedro Sánchez Visits Wildfire Command Centre as National Emergency Response Continues
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has visited the Advanced Command Post in Cenicientos, Madrid, as emergency services continue battling the major wildfires affecting the Community of Madrid and the province of Ávila.
Briefed by emergency commanders and senior government officials, Sánchez thanked firefighters, the Military Emergencies Unit (UME), Guardia Civil, Policía Nacional and Civil Protection volunteers for their work in protecting lives and communities. He said the government’s immediate priority remains saving lives and safeguarding populated areas, adding that every available national resource is being deployed to support the emergency response.
The Prime Minister also warned that Spain is facing increasingly severe wildfire seasons, noting that more than 130,000 hectares have already burned this year—well above the average annual area affected over the past decade. He renewed his call for a national agreement on tackling climate change, saying the country must strengthen both its emergency response capabilities and long-term prevention measures.
Sánchez said the government would continue to support the affected communities throughout the emergency and would provide assistance during the recovery and reconstruction phase once the fires are brought under control. A unified command structure remains in place to coordinate operations across Madrid and Ávila as firefighters continue working in difficult conditions.
