Portugal to close border with Spain after country reports surge in coronavirus cases
The border between Portugal and Spain is to close today for an initial period of two weeks, following on from a sudden increase in covid-19 cases in Portugal.
Portuguese officials announced the closures of the internal border in yesterdays session regarding Portugal’s state of emergency legislation.
Crossing of the border by land, sea or air will be prohibited unless it is deemed an essential journey.
Spain’s neighbour has said it’s medical system is near collapse due to being overwhelmed by coronavirus cases.
Meanwhile authorities in Galicia have said that a man tested in the city of Vigo has tested positive for the South African variant of the coronavirus.
The man, who had recently returned from a work trip in South Africa, attended a local hospital displaying symptoms of the virus.
The man was discharged from hospital and is now in quarantine.
