The Cabildo de Tenerife quantifies the losses due to the fire at 80.4 million euros

The Cabildo de Tenerife has said the forest fire which started over a fortnight ago has caused over eighty million euros worth of damage.

Officials on the island said the fire – which was first spotted on the fifteenth of August – had destroyed over fifteen thousand hectares of woodland on the north east of the island affecting the Arafo mountain area.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, said that the affected area will be declared a catastrophic zone following confirmation that the blaze was now under control – but yet to be extinguished.

Investigators are continuing to determine who – or what – caused the fire which has been called the worst forest fire in the Canaries for over forty years.
