Monitoring Shows No Immediate Volcanic Threat in Tenerife

Scientists monitoring volcanic activity in Tenerife have reported a minor increase in carbon dioxide emissions and slight ground deformation on Mount Teide.

Despite these findings, the likelihood of a volcanic eruption happening in the short to medium term has not increased.

Itahiza Domínguez, director of the National Geographic Institute, reassured the public that these changes do not necessitate raising the volcanic risk alert level.

He explained that typical eruptions in the Canary Islands are preceded by significant indicators of activity, such as noticeable seismic activity and ground deformation – as what occurred in La Palma in 2021.
