Air quality falls as eruption continues on La Palma

Air quality on parts of the island of La Palma has decreased in the last day due to increases of ash in the air, as well as higher levels of lava flows.

Schools in five munincipalities on the island have closed for today, with a number of flights from regional airline Binter also suspended.

Sulphur dioxide levels as well as micro-particulates in Los Llanos de Aridane rose above 600 micrograms per cubic metre, close to the level that would trigger air quality alerts.

Meanwhile residents are starting to ask for permission to exhume the remains of loved ones in graveyards that are at risk of being overrun with lava.

Cemeteries had been closed in parts of La Palma due to ash, however many were opened yesterday for All Saints Day.

Relatives of those interred at Las Manchas cemetery – where a lava flow is currently 600 metres away – have issued a proposal for the exhumation of their loved ones, and for re-burial at a safe location.
