Volcano cone collapses as more quakes recorded on La Palma
The main cone on the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma has collapsed, triggering lava to overflow the main vent on the erupting volcano.
Yesterday evening another strong earthquake at a magnitude of 4.8 was also recorded, with it being felt in Tenerife, El Hierro and also La Gomera.
Located at a depth of 34 kilometres and with its epicentre in the Villa de Mazo area, it’s the latest strong quake on the island. However scientists still attribute the activity to magma moving towards the main eruption site.
Meanwhile the GNSS has announced that sensors in the Los Llanos area has detected an increase in ground deformation of around 10cm. The change in height is expected to bring with it an increase in activity on the eruptive areas, with warnings of an increase in volumes of lava flows in the coming days.
