Unesco has declared that the Risco Caído and the sacred mountains of Gran Canaria are to be added to the list of World Heritage Sites.
The pre-hispanic settlement dates back to the Guanches, the indigenous population who lived on the islands before the Castilian conquest in 1402.
The 18,000 hectare site joins the other 48 declared heritage sites across Spain.
