Five tourists detained on suspicion of using fake bank notes

Five tourists, described as being Irish and British have been arrested in Santa Ponsa on the island of Majorca, over possession of forged bank notes.

Guardia Civil arrested the tourists after a shopkeeper became suspicious of a banknote he was given by one of the five.

During the investigation, officers discovered €400 in their possession, allegedly obtained by swapping counterfeit Sterling at currency exchanges. Seventeen fake fifty pound notes have been recovered. They are said to have been high quality counterfeits and difficult to detect.
