Spain ‘very close’ to signing deal on post-Brexit status of Gibraltar

Spain is ‘very close’ to signing a post-Brexit deal on Gibraltar’s status.

The Spanish Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Albares, announced progress after a meeting with the British Foreign Secretary, David Cameron, in Brussels.

The discussions include the details on the usage of the airport.

The status of Gibraltar and border control have been contentious issues since the United Kingdom’s twenty sixteen European Union exit. Spain previously proposed a ‘balanced and generous agreement’.

All parties have agreed to further talks in Brussels. Gibraltar, under British rule since the eighteenth century, was excluded from the Brexit deal.

Spain would police the port and airport, with an open land border and free movement proposed.
