Sanchez defends Catalonia funding deal as a move towards federalisation
Pedro Sánchez, has termed the funding pre-agreement between the PSC and ERC as a significant step towards a federalised Spain. He stressed the importance of a multilateral negotiation for a new funding model for all regions. Sánchez believes the deal enhances inter-regional solidarity, aiming for an equitable distribution of public services across Spain.
Additionally, the pre-agreement includes plans for a national convention focusing on resolving political tensions, and the establishment of a Department for Linguistic Policy to protect the Catalan language. Throughout his address, Sánchez passionately defended this agreement, advocating that it preserves solidarity between regions and contributes to addressing one of Spain’s key territorial issues.
Responding to concerns about the consequences of the agreement, including potential impacts on the national Social Security fund, Sánchez reiterated the importance of reinforcing essential public services. He drew comparisons to previous political actions, underscoring a commitment to developing a strong, united Spain, while also acknowledging the need for diverse regional interests to be respected and accommodated.
