Podemos tables vote of no confidence in Rajoyy

Podemos has tabled a largely symbolic motion of no confidence against Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy in congress.

The motion, raised yesterday is widely expected to fail, but is being suggested that it could be in an effort to cause embarrasment to PSOE.

PSOE, who are in the process of electing a new leader, and Ciudadanos immediately said that they wouldn’t support the motion.

The action from Podemos comes after a series of ongoing court cases which has centred on the governing Partido Popular.

Spain has seen only two motions of no confidence against sitting prime ministers since the transition to democracy in the 1970s — and both of them failed.
