Parliament votes to approve euthanasia in Spain

Parliament has voted to approve legislation that will allow medically assisted suicide and euthanasia.

Long-suffering patients of incurable diseases or those who are deemed to be in an unbearable permanent condition, will be able to request medical intervention that would end their lives at a time of their choosing.

The reading of the Bill passed 198 in favour – 138 against, with 2 abstentions. PP, Vox and UPN voted against the bill.

It will now face a vote in the upper house of the Cortes – the Senate – where it is expected to pass without amendment.

If the Bill becomes law, this would make Spain the sixth country in the world to recognize this right after the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Canada and New Zealand.
