Illa resists calls to resign ahead of Catalan regional elections

Health Minister Salvador Illa has said that he will remain within his position until the campaign period for the upcoming regional election campaign in Catalonia begins.

In a statement issued yesterday, the minister said he would continue to concentrate on managing the health crisis until the official campaign period began.

His comments however have caused disagreements within the coalition government, after coalition partners Unidos Podemos joined PP, Vox and Ciudadanos to call for his immediate resignation ahead of the ballot.

Mr Illa announced his candidacy last Wednesday, but insisted that he would remain in his position until the end of the month.
