Forest fire sites declared “Catastrophic zones”

The Government has declared the areas affected by this summers wildfires as “catastrophic zones”, after double the number of forest fires were recorded this year compared to the year before.

In a statement from Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, he called on regional authorites and government groups to work together to prevent and tackle fires.

13 autonomous communities have had areas earmarked as for the zones, incluing Castilla y León, Andalusia, Aragon, the Canary Islands, Castilla La-Mancha, Catalonia, the Valencian Community, Extremadura, the Balearic Islands, La Rioja, Madrid and the Principality of Asturias.

The declaration means additional funding and support for regional bodies.
