Spain to pause use of AstraZeneca vaccine for fortnight as precaution

Health Minister Carolina Darias has confirmed that the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine is to be suspended for at least two weeks, after Spain joined a number of countries placing a halt on the use of the vaccine.

In a statement issued by the minister yesterday afternoon, she said that the measure was precautionary after Denmark and Norway reported isolated cases of bleeding, blood clots and a low platelet count.

The European Medicines Agency is expected to complete its safety review of issues relating to the AstraZeneca vaccine tomorrow.

Germany, France and Italy have also said they would pause inoculations using the vaccine.
