Woman dies in Costa del Sol floods

A 26-year-old woman has died, and hundreds of people have had their homes flooded in the worst rains in over 30 years in Spain.

The woman, who has yet to be named locally, was found dead in a nightclub in the town of Estepona on the Costa del Sol.

Spain’s meteorological service AEMET issued a “red alert” at the peak of the rainfall, its highest level of warning for “extreme risk”, although it since lowered the warning one level to “important risk”.

The regions emergency plan was activated in the early hours of Sunday morning. More than 600 emergency incidents had been reported due to weather and 300 rescue workers were working on Sunday to help people.

Guardia Civil helicopters were scrambled to rescue people who were stranded on the roof’s of their homes.

The regions infrastructure was also damaged in the rains, with the main A-7 motorway impassable in places due to the waters, and rail and airports also reporting disruption too.
