Giant construction platform washes up on Benalmadena beach

Visitors to playa de Benalnatura had a surprise on Friday, after a construction platform washed up on the shore after storms in the Mediterranean.

The structure, which was being towed by a ship from the port of Algeciras, broke free after rough seas damaged the connection between it and its parent ship.

Authorities said there was little risk to the environment, as there was little or no fuel or oil on board. Guardia Civil and coast guards were in operation around the structure to ensure that the risk to the public was minimised.

It is expected that a rescue operation, which will tow the stranded structure back to Algeciras, will get underway when weather conditions improve.
