Mar Menor: Regional government introduces fertilizer ban

The regional government in Murcia has announced a ban on the use of nitrogen rich fertilizers after millions of fish have washed up on the shores of the Mar Menor.

Almost five tonnes of dead sealife has been collected from the coastline of the lagoon, with investigations being launched to determine the cause of the latest mass death event in the water.

In a statement from the regions Ministry of Agriculture, they announced a ban on the use of inorganic nitrogen based fertilizers in areas which have a direct run off into the sea.

Concerns over illegal irrigation have also been raised, with the Minister for Ecological Transition – Teresa Ribera – visiting the site on Tuesday, calling for stricter controls in the region.
