Central Electoral Board to comply with Supreme Court over voting law

The Junta Electoral Central has agreed to comply with the Supreme Court’s order to review the voting rights of people who obtained Spanish nationality under the so-called “law of grandchildren”.

The electoral authority will ask the Oficina del Censo Electoral and Spanish consulates for information identifying people registered to vote from abroad under the Law of Democratic Memory.

The Supreme Court has ordered that the electoral rights of those covered by the measure be suspended until it can be established whether they meet the legal requirement of being descendants of Spanish exiles.

The decision could affect more than half a million registrations or applications linked to the law.

The JEC says it will now establish how the review should be carried out.
