New legislation introduced prohibiting working outdoors during extreme heatwaves
Labour Minister Yolanda Diaz has confirmed that new legislation is to be passed in the coming weeks, that will prohibit outdoor working during extreme heat events.
Under the measures, if weather warnings for heatwaves are issued by meterological agency Aemet, those who work outside – such as street cleaners, builders and those in the agricultrual sector – will be prohibited from working during the hottest periods.
The measures have been introduced following a number of deaths last year due to heatstroke’s, alongside long-term drought conditions which are being attributed to climate change.
