Sitges mayor and councillors arrested on corruption probe

Policia Nacional have arrested the mayor of Sitges, on suspicion of corruption.

Officers from the Economic Crimes Unit detained Aurora Carbonell, as well as city councillor Jaume Monasterio in the Catalan city as well as three other members of the council staff in raids which have seen in total nine people detained.

The investigation began over a year ago, after concerns were raised that grants and contracts were being awarded without proper due dilligence.

Investigations are set to continue, with another 13 people under scrutiny in connection to the case.
