Police Dismantle Violent Gang in Barcelona

In a substantial crackdown on organized crime, Barcelona’s National Police have successfully apprehended three key figures linked to the notorious ‘Barrio 18’ gang, also known as ‘Calle 18’. These arrests, made in the areas of Nou Barris and L´Hospitalet de Llobregat, are accused of engaging in criminal activities such as assault, threats, and illegal possession of firearms.

The operation, which saw collaboration from both local police and the FBI, marks a significant step in eradicating the presence of this transnational gang within Spain. Initiated following several reports of threats and aggression towards migrants from the Americas, the investigation revealed the gang’s attempt to expand its influence in Barcelona. This operation follows a prior takedown in February of a similar gang structure, showcasing ongoing national and international efforts against organized crime.

The police action involved a bespoke operation unit, including the General Commissariat of Information and the Provincial Information Brigade of Barcelona, under the guidance of the Instruction Court number 25 of Barcelona. The arrests and subsequent house searches led to the recovery of a handcrafted firearm, known as a ‘Chilean’, and ammunition, emphasizing the lethal potential of this gang. The operation remains open, highlighting the commitment of Spanish police forces in collaboration with global agencies like the FBI to combat the threat of transnational criminal gangs.
