Grandmother’s Gift: Second Uterus Transplant Baby Born in Barcelona

Barcelona’s Hospital Clinic has marked a pioneering achievement in Spain with the birth of a healthy baby from the second woman to undergo a uterus transplant in the country. The transplant was performed in April 2022, with the baby arriving this year, welcomed into the world in good health and weighing 2.9 kilos. Notably, the uterus donor is the child’s own grandmother, providing a living legacy and advancing maternal healthcare options.

This successful procedure is part of a cutting-edge research project that aims to validate the viability of uterus transplants. Initiated seven years ago, the project has approved five transplants for women with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, a congenital condition characterized by the absence of a uterus and fallopian tubes. The research involves a dedicated team of over fifty professionals, demonstrating the hospital’s commitment to addressing reproductive challenges.

The head of Gynecology at Hospital Clinic, Francisco Carmona, noted the profound significance of the mother receiving the uterus in which she was once carried, signalling this event as both a medical and scientific landmark.
