Record Number Of Migrants Reach Spain’s Canary Islands

A record-breaking number of migrants – nearly 32,000 – have arrived in the Canary Islands this year, surpassing the previous record set in 2006.

In a recent rescue operation off El Hierro, seven hundred and thirty-nine people were saved by Guardia Civil and other authorities, including women and children.

The Canary Islands regional chief has called for more assistance from the Spanish government and the European Union, as milder weather and calmer seas have contributed to the increase in arrivals.
