Weather agency Aemet has issued a red alert weather warning for Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria today for a sudden heatwave.
Temperatures are expected to reach 40 ºC on the eastern islands, whilst the rest of the archipelago is on amber alert for temperatures at around 37 ºC
People are being advised to avoid exposure to the sun between the hours of 10am until 7pm, and to ensure they drink plenty of water. The elderly, young or infirm are also being advised to remain as cool as possible.
