Yellow alert issued as IGN increases monitoring on La Palma after increase in volcanic activity

The National Geographical Institute – the IGN – has increased surveillance on the island of La Palma, following on from an increase in seismic activity on the island.

Yesterday the Canarian Government issued a yellow volcanic alert – the lowest level of alert after 2935 tremors – some strong enough to be felt by people – were detected since Saturday.

Sensors on the island have recorded the strongest quakes with a magnitude of 3.9, as well as an 1.5cm deformation in the epicentre of the swarm.

Authorities have said that at present there is no grounds for concern, and the current alert level is only in place due to the increases in volcanic activity in the area.
