43 arrested in illegal waste disposal operation

Guardia Civil have arrested 43 people in connection to an illegal rubbish smuggling operation that saw thousands of tonnes of hazardous waste shipped to Africa for disposal.

Officers in Gran Canaria detained the group who are suspected of sending over 330 containers of waste to Ghana, Mauritania, Nigeria and Senegal over the last two years.

The gang is believed to have fabricated customs declarations for the items stating that they were second-hand goods destined for resale on the continent.

It’s understood the gang netted over €1.5 million in the operation, with a further 30 shipping containers of illegal waste confisacted at the port of La Luz in the capital of Gran Canaria.
