52 missing – feared dead – after migrant boat sinks in Gran Canaria coastal region

Fears are growing that 50 migrants who were crossing from Africa to the Canary islands have died after their boat overturned.

A rescue helicopter was scrambled yesterday (Thursday) afternoon, after a boat was discovered 138 miles off of the coast of Gran Canaria.

One woman was rescued from the vessel, whilst the remains of two others were also recovered.

It’s believed an additional 50 people were on the boat when it overturned.

A search and rescue operation is underway to locate any survivors, as well as to recover those who have lost their lives in the incident.
