Tyre fire causes emergency to be declared in El Hierro

The Cabildo de El Hierro declared an emergency yesterday after an industrial fire started releasing toxic fumes.

Emergency services were called to an industrial complex on Tuesday morning to reports of a fire in El Majano. The fire was in an area where tyres, matresses and chemicals were stored.

Residents on the island were told to stay indoors and to avoid the area. The fire was brought under control around 6.30 yesterday evening.
