Canary Islands President Calls for Urgent Action on Children’s Immigration Law
The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, has stated he will work in August to reform immigration laws to ensure the proper reception of minors. Clavijo emphasised the need for a decree law and confirmed the urgency of the situation, citing expected increases in migrant arrivals later this year.
The President pointed out the necessity for a legislative decree that would allow immediate measures to manage the upcoming influx of migrants. This step is crucial for providing urgent support, underlining the importance of collaboration with the Popular Party, as any decree must be confirmed within thirty days in Congress.
Moreover, he noted that even with immediate measures, ongoing legislative reform is planned for Congress in the form of a proposition to enable a thoughtful dialogue and incorporate amendments from various political parties. Clavijo expressed that a decree is needed to prevent the Canary Islands from bearing the full weight of this humanitarian issue.
