Pope Francis: Spain to observe 3 days of official mourning

The government has declared three days of official mourning following the death of Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88.

The mourning period will run from midnight on Tuesday to midnight on Thursday the 24th, as announced by government minister Félix Bolaños in a formal statement from the Moncloa yesterday.

During this time, flags will fly at half-mast on all public buildings and naval vessels, and official events will observe moments of silence in memory of the Pope.

In a statement, Mr. Bolaños paid tribute to the pontiff, commemorating his commitment to peace, social justice, and the vulnerable.

Spanish Cardinals head to Rome

Meanwhile 13 cardinals are to head to Vatican City from Spain as part of the College of Cardinals, to take part in the state funeral of the Pope.

4 of those are under the age of 80, and will remain in the Vatican for the forthcoming conclave to elect the next head of the Catholic Church.
