Supreme Court upholds suspension of “Grandchildren Law”
The Supreme Court has upheld the suspension of voting rights for some people who obtained Spanish nationality under the so-called Grandchildren’s Law.
The decision affects more than 163,000 people registered to vote from abroad, ahead of the general election on the 29th of November.

The law allows descendants of Spaniards who went into exile during the Civil War and Franco dictatorship to apply for nationality.
The Government, the public prosecutor and the State Attorney’s Office had all asked the court to lift the suspension.
The judges said there was not enough time to verify the electoral register before the election.
The Government is now considering whether to appeal to the Constitutional Court.
