Increase in Road Fatalities Highlights Speeding Concerns

This year fatalities on motorways and dual carriageways have risen by twenty one percent. A traffic enforcement campaign conducted by the Civil Guard saw over nine hundred fifty five thousand vehicles checked.
Throughout this campaign, fifty two thousand eight hundred eighty eight drivers, which is five point five percent of those checked, were reported for exceeding speed limits. Interestingly, the proportion of offenders remained consistent with previous campaigns. When comparing ordinary roads with motorways, the percentage of reported speeding drivers is notably similar, indicating a concerning trend in speeding practices across all types of roads.

In terms of legal ramifications, seven drivers were summoned to court for committing an offence under road safety laws, having exceeded the speed limit by more than eighty kilometres per hour. Moreover, collaboration with local and regional police continues to unify efforts toward reinforcing speed limit compliance, an essential step in safeguarding road users.
