Historic papal bull found after years being missing
Guardia Civil has recovered a sixteenth-century papal bull linked to the Battle of Lepanto.
The document had been missing for decades in El Viso del Alcor, in Seville province.
Officers began investigating its disappearance in 2024 and traced it to a local resident, who voluntarily handed it over last month.
Experts in Seville and the Vatican’s Apostolic Archive have confirmed its authenticity.
The document dates from the pontificate of Pope Pius the Fifth and is linked to Fernando Arias de Saavedra and the participation of local men in the 1571 Battle of Lepanto.
