Eviction victim Maricarmen Abascal dies, aged 87

Maricarmen Abascal, whose eviction from her Madrid home became a symbol of the fight for affordable housing, has died at the age of 87.

She had been taken to hospital after being evicted from the home where she had lived for around seven decades.

Her case sparked protests and a housing campaign that continued after her eviction.

An agreement was eventually reached allowing her to return home, but it came too late.

Maricarmen remained in hospital until her death yesterday.
