Demolition of nuclear power plant approved

The Ministry for the Ecological Transition has approved demolition work to start at the Santa María de Garoña nuclear power plant in Burgos.

Costing nearly half a billion euros, the decommissioning of the plant will take at least ten years and will employ around 350 people to work on the dismantling of the site – excluding the disposal of spent nuclear fuel.

Taking two phases, the work will firstly decommission the turbine halls and electricity generation sections of the site, with the second removing and disposing of the nuclear areas of the facility including the reactors and cooling pools.
