Government voices expectation over Italy border checks

The Spanish government says it expects Italy to reconsider its position over border controls, insisting that the Schengen area has not been violated.

The dispute follows Italy’s decision to introduce checks on travellers arriving from Spain, with Madrid responding by temporarily reinstating controls on passengers arriving from Italy.

Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares says Spain hopes Italy will recognise that the measures taken by Madrid are a response to the situation and are consistent with European rules.

The Spanish government says it remains committed to the free movement of people within the European Union, while the diplomatic dispute continues.
