Record-Breaking Tourist Expenditure in Spain
In a significant boost to its economy, Spain has seen a record-breaking month for tourism in January.
According to the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the country welcomed 4.8 million international tourists, representing a 15.3% increase from the same period last year.
This rise in tourist numbers has also led to a remarkable leap in spending, with foreign visitors pouring in 6.55 billion euros, marking a 25.5% increase from January of the previous year.
Minister of Industry and Tourism, Jordi Hereu, has highlighted the continuous growth in both tourist numbers and spending as a stimulus for public policies aimed at enhancing sustainability indices in social, environmental, and digital areas.
With Spain setting the pace in global tourism, efforts are now being intensified to not only remain a top destination but also to become a reference in the new global tourism industry.
The average expenditure per traveller in January reached 1,374 euros, up by 8.9% from last year, with daily spending per tourist also on the rise at 158 euros, reflecting a 6% year-on-year increase.
The United Kingdom continues to be the leading source of tourists, with over 833,000 visitors in January, followed by France and Germany.
Remarkably, Switzerland leads the growth rates among countries, with a 32.1% increase in tourists compared to last year, followed by Ireland and the USA. Canary Islands emerged as the favourite destination among tourists, receiving 27.7% of the total visitors, with Catalonia and Andalusia also seeing significant increases in tourist numbers.
